Working with horses is like unwrapping a surprise parcel
Sometimes working with a new horse is like removing the wrapping on a Christmas present because you never know what you are going to receive.
Same as with surprise gift, the outside layer might be appealing and impressive looking, followed by something ordinary and unexpected, but some layers are lovely, beautifully bright, and there might be even a small surprise gift hidden to keep you going.
In between, there are plain boxes with lots of sticky tape holding it together, in your horse’s case that could be bracing, to hold on to a posture that is not sustainable. Your progress slows down, like humans, we have habits that we are not even aware of; first, we have to acknowledge them. Particularly when it comes to muscle memory.
So you start looking for solutions to solve these new changing layers and working on sorting these roadblocks out.
Depending on the horse and their past experiences, they can be quite vocal about it.
…bam full stop screeching halt you hit a massive blockage, refusal, a brick wall, a complete stop.
The horse will associate specific movements with pain due to muscle tightness or restrictions- some of these horses get very vocal and in anticipation of pain.
So small steps and giving your horse time to adjust, to build and reshape new muscles to feel comfortable in a better position.
The brain is an essential part of the journey and to fill it with as many rewarding moments as possible and praise, every step in the right direction.
Getting out of bad habits is not easy!
Your horse is doing the best he can with the information you’re providing, so make the new information count provide your horse with the right information.
It is like listening to playlist –
Create your own playlist, so you enjoy the ride. 😉
In your horse’s case, that would be, even balance, a better posture and a willing partner that is looking forward to her ride.
Some of your horses’s pestering habits you really would like to delete
– grabbing the reins
– rushing
– refusing to go
And replace those with balance, coordination, and willingness to move forward.
You never know what might be in the centre of a well-wrapped surprise parcel.
Even the most challenging horse might just want to tell you something, tune in and listen. The most difficult mare can be a very rewarding riding partner if she feels understood or nurtured.
